As the German Army captured much territory across Europe, the Nazis established concentration camps across the nations that they seized control of. Many were set up inside Germany, but the largest complex was established in Poland and that was Auschwitz. Auschwitz became a huge centre of evil and depravity, and inside the gates of the camp the worst evils were committed. Some of the most infamous names associated with the Holocaust such as Josef Mengele, Josef Kramer and others would work inside the camp inflicting much suffering.
One of these men was Friedrich Entress, who worked inside Block 21 of the camp as a doctor. Inside here he performed many different experiments on prisoners, and murdered many in cold blood. It was estimated that each day Entress was killing around 100 prisoners, and subjected many people to illnesses such as TB and Typhoid. He tried different medications on patients that were rather horrific also. After the Second World War he was arrested as Germany fell, and he was placed on trial for his role inside of the concentration camps. He was sentenced to death and then executed at Landsberg Prison for his crimes.

During the Second World War, the German Army and the Nazis conquered large swathes of territory across Europe. In Germany and the newly Nazi-occupied lands, huge networks of concentration camps such as Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen were established. It was inside these horrific camps that the Holocaust occurred with millions suffering from horrific treatment before they were then killed. Ravensbruck Concentration Camp was established as a camp for mostly women and children and it was here where many of the evil female guards associated with the Holocaust trained and worked.
One of these was Ruth Neudeck, a young lady who wished to work at the camp and very quickly she got her hands dirty and developed a reputation for being a sadistic and barbaric SS guard. She was known for her ill-treatment of prisoners and even murdering a number of them in brutal fashion. She also encouraged other guards to treat prisoners in this way, however her bosses were so impressed with her that they promoted her very high. She even at one point over-saw a sub-camp and extermination centre. Neudeck was also known for selections, choosing people to be sent straight to the gas chambers. After the Second World War was lost for Germany, she did try to escape however was captured by the British and placed on trial. She was then sentenced to death, and met her end at the gallows with Albert Pierrepoint in charge of her execution.

A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., returned an indictment yesterday charging a U.S. citizen and resident of Timor Leste with seven counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place.
According to court documents, Richard Jude Daschbach, 84, is a former priest who is alleged to have engaged in illicit sexual conduct with minor victims in Timor Leste starting in at least 2013. As alleged, Daschbach operated a “shelter home” for children in Timor Leste. Victims disclosed that Daschbach sexually abused them when they were children and resided in the shelter home. Daschbach was defrocked by the Catholic church after some of the victims disclosed the abuse to the church. Daschbach is currently facing related child sexual exploitation charges in Timor Leste. In addition, in 2019, a grand jury in the Northern District of California returned an indictment against Daschbach for wire fraud in connection with his fundraising activity for the shelter home.
Today’s indictment represents a significant step toward accountability for harms suffered by multiple vulnerable children allegedly victimized by this defendant,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. for the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “I’d like to thank the hardworking investigative and prosecution teams for their work today and every day to ensure that child predators face justice and children are kept safe.”
“This case shows that we will use the full extent of the law to prosecute U.S. citizens who allegedly prey on children, no matter how far we must go to bring them to justice,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips for the District of Columbia. “Together with our law enforcement partners, we must ensure that people placed in positions of trust do not betray their responsibilities to help the children who depend upon them.”
Daschbach is charged with seven counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place, Timor Leste. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison per count. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The FBI is investigating the case. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs provided significant assistance.
Trial Attorneys Jessica Urban and Alicia A. Bove of the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) and Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Larson of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia are prosecuting the case. The Criminal Division’s Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) provided assistance.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. During the Second World War, concentration camps were used by the Nazis to carry out the evil of the Holocaust. It was within these horrific camps that so many innocent people were killed, and Auschwitz was the biggest killing centre. Inside of the camp, gas chambers were used and within minutes of arriving at Auschwitz scores were killed.
One of these to suffer was Edith Stein, who after World War 2 became a saint within the Catholic Church. Edith Stein was born into a Jewish family, however she converted to Catholicism whilst studying a book that changed her life. She then joined a monastery and continued her work as a philosopher and she was regarded as an intellectual elite, but when the Nazis took control she was forced to leave her job and was eventually arrested before being taken to Auschwitz.
Shortly after arriving at the camp, Edith did not pass the selection process to make it into the camp to work and was sent straight to the gas chambers. Alongside hundreds of other innocent people she was killed within minutes of arriving at Auschwitz. After World War 2 she later became a Saint and today is celebrated because of it.

A federal appellate court refused late Thursday to delay implementation of a judge’s order reinstating a Trump administration policy forcing thousands to wait in Mexico while seeking asylum in the U.S.
President Joe Biden had suspended former President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy on his first day in office and the Department of Homeland Security said it was permanently terminating the program in June, according to the court record. U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk last week ordered that the program be reinstated Saturday.
The Biden administration appealed to the 5th U.S. Circuit Appeal in New Orleans and asked for a delay in re-implementing the program, formally known as Migrant Protection Protocols, pending appeal. The administration argued in briefs that the president has “clear authority to determine immigration policy” and that the Secretary of the Department of Homeland security, Alejandro Mayorkas, had discretion in deciding whether to return asylum seekers to Mexico.
Lawyers for the states of Texas said Missouri, which challenged the suspension of MPP, opposed a stay of Kacsmaryk’s order. They said the Biden administration had not gone through proper procedures in ending the policy. And they argued that after the policy was implemented immigrants without legitimate claims for asylum had begun to return to their home countries voluntarily.

CHINA has sparked fresh war fears after it warned Taiwan the United States “fleeing action” is a forecast in an apparent reference to the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. The last few days have seen chaos ensue in Afghanistan as Western nations evacuated their soldiers and civilians amid the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

Creaghan Harry, 53, the owner of multiple telemedicine companies, has been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, and four counts of income tax evasion, according to a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) statement.
Along with co-conspirators Lester Stockett and Elliot Loewenstern, Harry has previously been indicted on one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, four counts of receipt of kickbacks, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Stockett and Loewenstern have already pled guilty to the charges.
The latest indictment alleges that Harry and his co-conspirators “solicited illegal kickbacks and bribes from durable medical equipment (DME) suppliers and marketers in exchange for orders for DME braces and medications.”
The DOJ then alleges that Harry’s telemedicine companies paid physicians to place unnecessary medical orders, which were billed to Medicare for over $784 million. Of the total amount billed, Medicare has been officially defrauded of over $247 million.
In an attempt to cover his tracks, Harry allegedly directed DME suppliers to channel payments through domestic and international shell companies run by so-called straw owners, or people who own something legally but do so on behalf of someone else, in this case Harry.
Harry would then transfer the payments to the telemedicine companies in his name, which were used to pay the physicians to place the unnecessary orders.
The indictment goes on to say that the roughly $10 million per year Harry was reporting as fees paid by patients to receive his telemedicine services was in fact revenue derived from illegal kickbacks and bribes. This would also imply that Harry lied to prospective investors and lawyers about the source of his revenue.
In addition to health care fraud and wire fraud, the DOJ alleges Harry committed tax evasion between 2015 and 2018. They claim the funds transmitted through the shell companies were not declared on any of Harry’s tax returns and were instead used to fund his lavish lifestyle.
Harry faces a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment should he be convicted of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud. This does not include the five years he is potentially facing on each of the tax evasion counts, the five years for conspiring to defraud the U.S., the ten years for each count of receipt of kickbacks, and the 20 years for conspiring to commit money laundering.

US policymakers also wanted to see “a new government with which the United States can live in peace”.[13] Operation Mongoose is distinct from Operation Northwoods, a Department of Defense plan to conduct real and/or simulated false flag attacks on US and Cuban civilians inside the US and in Cuba in order to discredit the Castro regime.

During the Second World War, there were many countries and groups who collaborated with Adolf Hitler, The Nazis and The Third Reich. Some countries were forced to after they were occupied, however there were other people who believed in Hitler’s ideas and they defected.
One such man was Andrey Vlasov, who was considered in the Soviet Union a rather brilliant military general, who earlier on in World War 2 had defiantly led the Red Army against the Nazis during the Siege of Moscow. Andrey Vlasov continued to command large parts of the Red Army, but after the Siege of Leningrad he defected and decided to betray his homeland. He was rejected the opportunity to retreat after his army encountered difficulty, and after this he became embittered against Bolshevism and Stalin. He decided to negotiate with the Nazis during his imprisonment, and convinced Heinrich Himmler to allow him to set up the Russian Liberation Army. This was a group of Nazi-sympathetic Soviet soldiers who fought alongside the Wehrmacht in their own divisions.
So Vlasov was leading a traitorous army for the Germans, however he would be captured. As the war came to a conclusion, he was captured and handed over to the Russians who placed him on trial. Many saw him as a despicable traitor who was once a proud war hero, but he was sentenced to death for treason. Along with a number of other high ranking members of the Russian Liberation Army he was executed in a Russian prison.

From the billion-dollar business of selling GDR prisoners to West Germany, to the “filtering” of Western traffic at border crossings to recruit unofficial collaborators, Mielke’s specialists were everywhere. We see how Mielke’s power grew, as the Wall and the border system were perfected, and how the walling-in of the population created more and more work for the Stasi.
The Wall became the Stasi’s main field of activity, and its daily bread. The fall of the Wall brought an abrupt end to both East Germany and its security apparatus. An irony of history is that, on November 9, 1989, it was a Stasi man who opened the first barrier on Bornholmer Strasse and thus initiated the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Lowy Institute’s Dr Rodger Shanahan says the Taliban’s capture of Afghanistan happened at a “withering pace” but it was understood the terrorist organisation would regain power.

On Thursday (Aug. 12), the FBI arrested Anton Joseph “Tony” Lazzaro on multiple sex trafficking charges. During the Second World War, propaganda was used by all countries involved for various different purposes. The Nazis used it to poison the minds of the population and promote their brutal and horrific policies, but propaganda came in a number of different forms. Radio broadcasts were utilised to play to the enemy also, and the Germans frequently tried to affect British morale with radio broadcasts.
One of the most famous figures of the Second World War was William Joyce, who was known to the British as Lord Haw Haw. Joyce was a traitor who defected from Britain to Nazi Germany shortly before World War Two broke out to work for Hitler’s regime. He was a leading member of the British Union of Fascists, however once he arrived in Germany he was given a job by Joseph Goebbels’ Ministry of Propaganda, and he began to broadcast his radio show Germany Calling.
This attracted millions of listeners each time it was broadcast, and the British government even encouraged the population not to listen to it. During the broadcasts Joyce would talk about the German Army’s strength and try to demoralise the British and the US, however he became known as Lord Haw Haw for his upper class accent. His final radio broadcast came as Berlin fell into the Soviet hands in April 1945, however the hunt was on by the British to capture Lord Haw Haw.
He was eventually found near to Denmark with his wife and was wounded by a British soldier and then was transferred for his trial. At trial he was sentenced to death for treason, and his death sentence is rather controversial as it was argued he could not be condemned as he had obtained a British passport under false pretences. However this sentence was carried out, and Lord Haw Haw was executed.

Since the adoption of the new German law, at least 13 countries—in addition to the European Commission—have adopted or proposed models of intermediary liability broadly similar to the act’s matrix. According to Freedom House’s 2019 assessment of freedom on the internet, four of those countries are ranked as being “not free” (Venezuela, Vietnam, Russia and Belarus, Honduras is not surveyed but is ranked as “not free” on press freedom), five are ranked “partly free” (Kenya, India, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines), and only three are ranked “free” (France, the United Kingdom, and Australia). With the exception of India, Kenya, Vietnam, and Australia, all these countries—as well as the European Commission—have explicitly referred to the Network Enforcement Act as an inspiration or justification for their models of intermediary liability.
Moreover, several of these countries, including Venezuela, Vietnam, India, Russia, Malaysia, and Kenya, require intermediaries to remove vague categories of content that include “fake news,” “defamation of religions,” and “anti-government propaganda,” and many of them include overly broad definitions of hate speech that go much further than the German law. A Russian bill signed into law by President Vladimir Putin in March is a good example.

“Socially significant information disseminated under the guise of reliable messages, which creates a threat to life and (/or) the health of citizens or property, the threat of mass disturbance of public order and (/or) public safety, or the threat of creating or impairing the proper operation of vital elements of transport or social infrastructure, credit institutions, energy facilities, industry or communications.”
Any controversial opinion or criticism of the government could plausibly be covered by this overly broad and vague definition, which falls considerably short of international human rights standards.
The explanatory report of the Russian bill explicitly referred to the Network Enforcement Act, and, responding to criticism, Kremlin representatives argued that false information “is regulated fairly harshly in many countries of the world including Europe. It is therefore of course necessary to do it in our country too.” This is a clear example of how Germany’s internet law provides cover for authoritarian states attempting to restrict online content.

In May, Singapore adopted the wide-ranging Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill. The law includes a vague definition of “false statements of fact,” authorizing a minister to issue directions to internet intermediaries that must correct or disable content. Prior to the adoption of the bill, a preliminary report referenced the German law. What might constitute false statement of facts? A 2018 report by the policy forum of Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party highlighted a Human Rights Watch report critical of press freedom restrictions in Singapore as based on “deliberate falsehoods” used to “advocate political change.” In other words, the law may well be used to target human rights and civil society groups shining a critical light on the Singaporean government.
However, both the Russian and Singaporean laws pale in comparison to the sweeping category of illegal content covered by Vietnam’s draconian Law on Cybersecurity, which passed in 2018 and prohibits: “propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” “distortion or defamation of the people’s administrative authorities,” “psychological warfare … causing division or hatred between [Vietnamese] ethnic groups, religions and people of all countries,” “insulting the [Vietnamese] people, the national flag, national emblem, national anthem, great men, leaders, famous people or national heroes,” and “invented or untruthful contents causing confusion amongst the Citizens.”

It is also problematic that some states, including Russia and Vietnam, have established (or proposed to establish) governmental entities responsible for notifying and ordering intermediaries to remove illegal content without any independent review or complaint mechanisms. When you combine the sweeping nature of the prohibited content with the lack of meaningful oversight, it is clear that these laws will serve to further entrench tight government control over an already restrictive online sphere.
Several of the laws or proposals we identified, including in the U.K. and India, don’t merely rely on a notification and takedown regime. They establish a “duty of care” requiring intermediaries to actively police and preventively remove illegal or undesirable content. Such a step may encourage automated moderation or filtering of user content through artificial intelligence and upload filters. This essentially poses the risk of reintroducing government-mandated prepublication censorship enforced by private tech companies. In the 18th and 19th centuries, European censors lost the struggle to keep up with clandestine publications and increasingly sophisticated printing presses. Consequently, pre-publication censorship all but died in the second half of the 19th century, only to be revamped and revitalized by totalitarianism in the 20th century. But in the digital age, censorship may ultimately be able to search and destroy undesirable content at a scale previously unimaginable.
All these developments suggest that the Network Enforcement Act has provided an important impetus for, and legitimacy to, models of intermediary liability that violate freedom of expression as set out in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This development contributes significantly to the weakening of the already perilous state of internet freedom around the world.
The adverse consequences of the Network Enforcement Act were certainly not intended by the German government. In conjunction with the German constitution and commitment to the rule of law, the act provides safeguards absent from the most draconian laws subsequently adopted by other states. Indeed, several of the countries that have mimicked the German law had already implemented severe restrictions of online freedom prior to the German initiative and would likely have tightened their grip irrespective of the Network Enforcement Act.
Yet, the act seems to have provided several states with both the justification and the basic model for swift and decisive action. Unwittingly, Europe’s most influential country has contributed to the erosion of global internet freedom by developing and legitimizing a prototype of online censorship that can readily be adapted to serve the ends of authoritarian states.
In a world where both online and offline speech is under systematic global attack, democracies have a special obligation to err on the side of free speech. Succumbing to the ever-present temptation of fighting illiberal ideas with illiberal laws is shortsighted and irresponsible. Once democracies cede the high ground, authoritarians will rush in, creating a regulatory race to the bottom. This entails severe and negative consequences for free speech, independent media, vibrant civil society, and political pluralism, without which authoritarianism cannot be defeated, nor democracy defended.

Dies birgt im Wesentlichen das Risiko der Wiedereinführung der von der Regierung vorgeschriebenen Vorab-Zensur, die von privaten Technologieunternehmen durchgesetzt wird. Im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert verloren die europäischen Zensoren den Kampf, mit geheimen Veröffentlichungen und immer ausgefeilteren Druckereien Schritt zu halten. Infolgedessen starb die Zensur vor der Veröffentlichung in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts praktisch aus, um im 20. Aber im digitalen Zeitalter kann Zensur letztendlich in der Lage sein, unerwünschte Inhalte in einem bisher unvorstellbaren Ausmaß zu durchsuchen und zu zerstören. In Verbindung mit der deutschen Verfassung und dem Bekenntnis zur Rechtsstaatlichkeit bietet das Gesetz Garantien, die von den drakonischsten Gesetzen, die später von anderen Staaten verabschiedet wurden, fehlen. Tatsächlich hatten einige der Länder, die das deutsche Gesetz nachgeahmt haben, bereits vor der deutschen Initiative starke Einschränkungen der Online-Freiheit eingeführt und hätten ihre Kontrolle wahrscheinlich unabhängig vom Netzdurchsetzungsgesetz verschärft. Dennoch scheint das Gesetz mehreren Staaten sowohl die Rechtfertigung als auch das Grundmodell für schnelles und entschlossenes Handeln geliefert zu haben. Unwissentlich hat Europas einflussreichstes Land zur Aushöhlung der weltweiten Internetfreiheit beigetragen, indem es einen Prototyp der Online-Zensur entwickelt und legitimiert hat, der leicht an autoritäre Staaten angepasst werden kann.
In einer Welt, in der sowohl die Online- als auch die Offline-Sprache systematisch weltweit angegriffen wird, haben Demokratien eine besondere Verpflichtung, auf der Seite der freien Meinungsäußerung zu irren. Der allgegenwärtigen Versuchung zu erliegen, illiberale Ideen mit illiberalen Gesetzen zu bekämpfen, ist kurzsichtig und verantwortungslos. Wenn Demokratien erst einmal die Oberhand verlieren, werden Autoritäre eingreifen und einen Regulierungswettlauf nach unten auslösen. Dies hat schwerwiegende und negative Folgen für die freie Meinungsäußerung, unabhängige Medien, eine lebendige Zivilgesellschaft und den politischen Pluralismus, ohne die der Autoritarismus nicht besiegt und die Demokratie nicht verteidigt werden kann.

Robert Alan Durst (born April 12, 1943) is an American real estate heir and suspected serial killer, the son of New York City businessman Seymour Durst and the elder brother of Douglas Durst, head of the Durst Organization. He is suspected of having murdered three people: Kathleen McCormack Durst, his first wife, who disappeared in New York in 1982; Susan Berman, his longtime friend, who was killed in Los Angeles in 2000; and his neighbor, Morris Black, who was killed in Texas in 2001. Durst was the subject of a multi-state manhunt after Black’s body parts were found floating in Galveston Bay. Although he admitted dismembering Black, he was acquitted of murdering Black on the grounds of self-defense.
On March 14, 2015, Durst was arrested in New Orleans on a first-degree murder warrant in relation to the Berman killing. In 2016 he was transferred to California, and in 2018 a judge ruled there was sufficient evidence for him to be tried for the death of Berman.[1] Durst’s trial began March 2, 2020,[2] but was postponed after six days due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3] After additional delays the trial resumed May 17, 2021.[4][5]
Also on May 17, 2021, the Westchester County District Attorney said that the disappearance of Kathleen McCormack Durst had been reclassified as a murder and would be reinvestigated.[6][7]

Following the Second World War, the Allies and the Red Army liberated the concentration camps in which the Nazis had committed horrific crimes and the Holocaust within. Camps such as Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz told the true horrors of the Holocaust, and after World War 2 a number of trials took place to bring the criminals responsible for the war crimes to justice.
The most high profile trials were the Nuremberg Trials, however there were many smaller ones that served to punish the guards from different camps. Jenny Barkmann was a young female concentration camp guard who in 1944 as the conflict was turning against the Nazis and the Germans found herself working within a concentration camp. Barkmann became a guard within Stutthof Concentration Camp, a camp outside of Danzig but over the years thousands of innocent people were killed there. The conditions were horrific with terrible starvation and disease plaguing the camp, and also the gas chambers were used there to carry out the Holocaust.
Barkmann became known as the ‘Beautiful Spectre,’ and was known for regularly viciously beating prisoners sometimes to death, and also taking part in the selections sending people to their deaths. After the conflict she was arrested and placed on trial, before being sentenced to death and condemned for her crimes. In front of a huge crowd of around 200,000 her sentence was carried out…

Over 10,000 people demonstrated this Saturday at the Piazza del Popolo in Rome after a digital certificate restricting access to public venues for unvaccinated people came into force.
The Green Pass allows vaccinated people to enter museums, bars and restaurants, public swimming pools and gyms, places that can also be accessed by people who recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months or can provide a negative test result. Protesters were seen carrying ‘No Green Pass’ banners and signs reading ‘We’re all brothers – vaccinated or not’ and ‘Freedom of choice for teachers and students.’
Some protesters were concerned about the effect of the health pass on their jobs: “We are only one part of the sector. But we are connected to everyone. It is discrimination.” From September on, according to the Italian press, the Green Pass will also be required to enter any kind of educational centre. Teachers, students and staff from the educational sector will need a health pass to get access to universities and schools.
