China has confined nearly 1,500 university students to their dormitories and hotels following an outbreak of COVID-19 in the northwestern city of Dalian. The order was issued Sunday after several dozen cases were reported at Zhuanghe University City and hundreds of students were transferred to hotels for observation. Students were attending class remotely and having their meals delivered to their rooms. The lockdown is the latest example of China’s zero-tolerance approach to the outbreak, which has brought considerable disruption to people’s lives and livelihoods. Quarantines, obligatory testing and travel restrictions have become a way of life for much of the population. The country’s vaccination rate is among the world’s highest and authorities are beginning to administer booster shots as winter descends.A Chinese city apologized and removed an employee from his post after he beat a dog to death while the owner was quarantining in a hotel with COVID-19. China is battling flare-ups of alleged COVID-19 cases, and its social media is awash with claims that some city authorities have turned to killing the pets of those who test positive to ensure the virus doesn’t spread further. Under Chinese law, animals infected with viruses can be killed during pandemics, but the law only extends to livestock, the South China Morning Post reported. However, the state-run Global Times newspaper said last month that it was permissible to slaughter domestic animals. On Friday, a woman in Shangrao in the eastern Jiangxi province, wrote on Weibo that city workers entered her apartment while she was quarantining in a hotel with COVID-19 and beat her dog to death. China plans to fully vaccinate all children between the ages of three and 11 against Covid-19 by the end of this year, even as some countries hesitate over greenlighting childhood inoculations before more data is available. The country has already fully vaccinated more than 75% of its 1.4 billion people, mostly adults and the elderly, with a slew of homegrown Covid shots. In recent weeks, the world’s most populous country has focused on rolling out boosters for adults and getting the initial shots in arms of teenagers and kids as young as three years old.
