Frank Henenlotter once wrote that nudie cuties were “undoubtedly the stupidest films on the face of the earth”, and this movie provides ample evidence in support of that, though it is by no means the stupidest nudie cutie ever made.

Before reading this description, please understand that any attempt to put the “plot” into words makes it more coherent than it actually is. That’s just what happens with a movie shot in three days, two of which were mostly ad-libbed. Lovable Bob Cresse (that’s how he’s billed in the credits!) plays Granny Good, headmistress and owner of Granny Good’s Finishing School for Girls. She also runs an illegal still, which a 7 foot tall wolfman helps her operate. The police place an undercover agent in the school as a student, a Fed-looking guy starts snooping around as well, and everything climaxes during a party being given to cover the shipping of the moonshine to the unlicensed distributors. Also, a cut-rate Dracula and a guy in a really obvious Frankenstein’s monster mask turn up at the party, in addition to the wolfman. None of that matters, because the main reason for watching this movie is to enjoy all the bare breasts on display (pretty much all of them worth looking at), and to laugh and/or groan at the cornball humor. That said, the movie comes off as sweetly innocent and amusing, rather than crass or dull. This film was published without copyright notice, which, under the copyright law in effect at the time, put it directly into the public doma

Within Our Gates (1920) is a silent race film that dramatically expresses the racial situation in America during the violent years of Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan, the Great Migration, and the emergence of the “New Negro”. The story focuses on an African-American woman who goes North in an effort to help a minister in the Deep South raise money to keep a school open for poor Black children. Her romance with a black doctor eventually leads to revelations about her family’s past that expose the racial skeletons in America’s closet, most famously through the film’s depiction of a lynching. Produced, written and directed by novelist Oscar Micheaux, it is the oldest known surviving film made by an African-American director.

George Melies’s `A Trip to the Moon’ welcomes a change in film making of the twentieth century. Combined with live action as well as models, the movie tells a story about astronauts who take a trip to the moon. The moon, having a human face captures the astronauts after they crash into its eye. They later escape the moon and it’s moon-men and make it back to earth safely. Melies wrote, directed and starred in this movie. A pretty good digital copy of the reconstruction of this difficult-to-find film. Its problems, especially with the title screens (and the apparently abscounded sound track) notwithstanding, well worth watching here.
Although I strongly dislike “best of all time”-type polls, in this case “La Passion” deserves its regular appearance at or near the top of such lists. Falconetti’s performance is peerless by any standard, the cinematography is magnificent, and the film’s naturalism is simply astonishing given the typical practices of the day (1925!).
If you do not know this work, invest the time & concentration to give it a fair viewing & it just might change your life. It will at least profoundly alter your understanding of what a driven director can accomplish with very modest means.
The final scenes, with Jeanne at the stake, just may not have any equal. And by the way, the script is largely taken verbatim from the actual transcript of her trial, so while Dreyer certainly has a particular point of view and espouses it with a somewhat melodramatic presentation (remember, 1925), the film is as historically accurate as almost any “documentary.”

This is a typical sex exploitation film from the early 1930s – complete with wild parties, sex out of wedlock, lesbianism, etc. A chorus girl’s exposure to the “casting couch” also exposes her to syphilis.

Exploitation filmmakers hoped to capitalize on the taboo subjects of venereal disease, sex before marriage, lesbianism, etc. while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 which forbade a film from containing such content. Films like this would tour the United States for years – mostly being shown in rundown, skid row theaters. This film has been re-edited and re-titled (“Human Wreckage”, “They Must Be Told”, “Trial Marriage”, “About Trial Marriage”) many times to attract the same audience to film, to take advantage of a taboo subject which may have gotten press recently or to appease local censors who disapproved of the film’s content.

  • Professor John Sylvestus Applegate has been dismissed from his college teaching position for objecting too loudly to the predominant part that football and other sports play in the curriculum, and soon finds himself dead broke when publishers show no interest in the dry material he brings them. Death Rides a Horse (Italian: Da uomo a uomo, lit. ‘As man to man’) is a 1967 Italian Spaghetti Western directed by Giulio Petroni, written by Luciano Vincenzoni and starring Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law.

Bill (John Phillip Law), a boy whose father was killed and mother and sister were raped and murdered in front of him by a gang, sets out 15 years later to exact revenge, having used the time to become an expert marksman with a gun. Each of the outlaws bears a characteristic that Bill memorized while watching his family slaughtered and his house set on fire: the first has a tattoo of four aces on his chest, the second a scar, the third one a distinctive earring and the fourth (who was the one who saved young Bill from the burning house) wears a necklace bearing a skull; while he saw the face of the fifth, he never saw the face of the man who saved him from the fire.

As he begins his journey, a gunfighter named Ryan (Lee Van Cleef) is released from a prison after serving 15 years there. He was framed for an armed robbery by the very same men who murdered Bill’s family. When they meet along the way, Ryan gets the better of Bill, who is blinded by vengeance, but he does Bill no harm. In the next town, Ryan asks for a man named Cavanaugh (Anthony Dawson), whom Bill recognized later as the man with four aces tattoo. Bill manages to kill Cavanaugh in a duel, but the more experienced Ryan insists on tracking the other outlaws alone. They cross paths again in Lyndon City, where Ryan meets rich banker named Walcott (Luigi Pistilli) and demands his share of the robbery 15 years ago. Walcott stages a robbery on his own bank and frames Ryan. When the tables are turned later, Bill reciprocates, helping Ryan escape from a jail. An equally determined Bill sets out ahead of him.

Bill reaches a Mexican town, where he recognizes the man with the big earring and guns him down. He is captured by the outlaws, beaten and buried alive from the neck down (he had also recognized the man with the scar and Walcott). Left to die in the hot sun, he is rescued by Ryan, who shoots several men standing guard. Preparing for the gang’s return, Bill notices that Ryan is wearing a necklace with a skull. Ryan admits he was present during the murders, but arrived late and did not participate; he also rescued Bill from the fire. He gives his word that once the outlaws have been dealt with, he will remain to face whatever justice Bill seeks.

In a final shootout during a sand storm, the last remaining man who killed Bill’s family has him dead to rights, only to be killed by Ryan’s thrown knife. Bill nonetheless insists on revenge. Ryan’s gun is empty, so Bill tosses a bullet to him. He has just one bullet left now himself. Ryan turns his back and walks away, daring Bill to shoot him in the back. Bill fires, but it is only to kill a surviving outlaw. A grateful Ryan then watches as he mounts his horse and rides away.
