The $40 Trillion Trap: Why America Can’t Afford Higher Rates – and Inflation Is the Fed’s Real Weapon
The United States is facing a fiscal tsunami: roughly $8 trillion in Treasuries must be rolled over in the next twelve months. With an average coupon of 3.3 percent and the 10-year yield at 4.81 percent, that’s at least $112 billion in additional interest costs – and that’s before the ongoing $2 trillion deficit is even counted. The Bessent-Warsh administration is preparing a “squeeze” at the long end – a high-stakes gamble. The collectivists in Berlin and Brussels don’t understand that the bill is coming due. Gold, silver, and Bitcoin are the only protection against what lies ahead.

THE $40 TRILLION BARRIER HAS BEEN BREACHED
On August 19, 2026, U.S. national debt surpassed the $40 trillion mark for the first time – six months earlier than projected by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Total debt now stands at **$40.047 trillion**, of which $32.266 trillion is held by the public and $7.781 trillion is intragovernmental debt. The debt-to-GDP ratio is approaching 125 percent – a level not seen since World War II.
“The budget has long been on a fairly unsustainable path.”
— Jessica Riedl, Brookings Institution
Since the 2008 financial crisis, U.S. debt has more than doubled. And it continues to grow: the CBO projects deficits of $1.853 trillion in fiscal year 2026, $1.887 trillion in 2027, and $2.080 trillion in 2028. The deficit now stands at 5.8 percent of GDP.
—
THE INTEREST BURDEN: $3 BILLION PER DAY
Interest payments on the national debt have reached dizzying heights. In August 2026, the CBO reported that net interest payments on public debt between October 2025 and July 2026 amounted to $963 billion** – roughly **$3.18 billion per day.
Metric Value
Net interest (Oct 2025 – Jul 2026) $963 billion
Daily interest burden $3.18 billion
Year-over-year interest increase +14% (+$117 billion)
Deficit (first 10 months of FY26) $1.8 trillion
Projected full-year deficit FY26 $2.1 trillion
Interest payments already exceed defense spending and are second only to social spending. In July 2026 alone, net interest outlays reached $104 billion.
“The interest burden is growing because the debt is larger than last year and because long-term rates are higher.”
— CBO
—
THE ROLLOVER TRAP: $8 TRILLION IN 12 MONTHS
The real bomb, however, lies in the refinancing requirement. In the next twelve months, roughly $8 trillion in maturing Treasuries must be placed on the market – a volume that challenges even the deepest and most liquid bond market in the world.
Metric Value
Maturing Treasuries (12 months) ~$8 trillion
Average coupon 3.3%
Current 10-year yield 4.81%
Additional annual interest cost ~$112 billion
Ongoing annual deficit ~$2 trillion
Total refinancing requirement ~$10 trillion
The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.81 percent on September 2 – its highest level in nearly three years. That’s 151 basis points above the average coupon of 3.3 percent. This spread alone generates roughly $112 billion in additional annual costs – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
“A further move toward the 5 percent mark could unsettle already battered equity markets.”
—
THE “SQUEEZE” AT THE LONG END – BESSENT AND WARSH ARE PLAYING WITH FIRE
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh are fully aware of the situation. They know that a rate hike in this environment would trigger a chain reaction. Nevertheless, Warsh opened the door to a September rate hike at the Jackson Hole symposium.
“The central banker stated that the Fed has ‘work to do’ as long as inflation remains elevated.”
— Kevin Warsh
The strategy is clear: they are attempting to “squeeze” long-term maturities – through targeted buybacks of higher-yielding bonds while maintaining control of the short end. A “high-stakes gamble,” as the author of this analysis aptly puts it. Markets are now pricing in a 66 percent probability of a rate hike in September.
But the parallel to Paul Volcker is misleading. Volcker was able to break inflation with double-digit rates in the 1980s because the debt-to-GDP ratio had been inflated down from 120 percent to 30 percent. Today, we are back at 120 percent.
First inflate away the real debt, then raise rates to kill inflation. We have now entered the inflation phase of the cycle.
—
BERLIN AND BRUSSELS: THE ETERNAL OPTIMISTS
The collectivists in Berlin and Brussels, of course, don’t understand this. They still believe you can keep going forever with other people’s money and the mantle of “democracy” – that the bill will never come due. The debt brake is being loosened, energy prices are rising, industry is relocating – and Brussels continues to dream of “green” and “digital” fairy tales.
But the bill will come due. The only question is when.
—
THE STABLECOIN THESIS: 10–15% INFLATION ON THE HORIZON
Perhaps the most explosive thesis in this analysis concerns stablecoins. If the U.S. Treasury pushes Treasury bill yields for stablecoins down to just 0.5 percent – for example, through a “Clarity Act” or a Trump executive order – it would unleash a massive wave of inflation.
Stablecoins like USDC and Tether already hold hundreds of billions of dollars in short-term U.S. government securities. If these yields are driven toward zero, it will ripple through the real economy – with estimated inflation rates of 10 to 15 percent.
—
THE ONLY SOLUTION: GOLD, SILVER, BITCOIN
The message is clear: Gold, silver, Bitcoin – hide them well from Klingbeil and the state leeches. Those who hold their wealth in fiat currency will be expropriated. Those who invest in hard assets and decentralized currencies can save themselves.
Current prices confirm the trend:
Asset Price (Sept. 2026)
Gold ~$4,310/oz
Silver ~$64.80/oz
Bitcoin ~$77,600
The rally in gold, silver, and Bitcoin is no coincidence. It is an expression of deep distrust in the fiat system.
—
💡 THE BOTTOM LINE
The United States is trapped in a deadly fiscal trap: $40 trillion in debt, $3 billion in daily interest costs, $8 trillion in refinancing needs over twelve months, and a Fed threatening a rate hike. The Bessent-Warsh strategy is desperate: they want to use inflation as a tool to inflate away the real debt – while maintaining control over long-term interest rates.
The risk: a loss of control in the bond market. If yields rise to 5 percent, the interest burden will explode. If inflation hits 10–15 percent, the entire financial system will be turned upside down.
The collectivists in Berlin and Brussels don’t understand this. But the market does. And it shows them – every single day.

— Jessica Riedl, Brookings Institution
Kennzahl Wert
Netto-Zinszahlungen (Okt 2025 – Juli 2026) 963 Mrd. USD
Tägliche Zinslast 3,18 Mrd. USD
Zinsanstieg gegenüber Vorjahr +14 % (+117 Mrd. USD)
Defizit (erste 10 Monate FY26) 1,8 Billionen USD
Prognostiziertes Jahresdefizit FY26 2,1 Billionen USD
Kennzahl Wert
Fällige Treasuries (12 Monate) ~8 Billionen USD
Durchschnittlicher Kupon 3,3 %
Aktuelle 10-Jahres-Rendite 4,81 %
Zusätzliche Zinskosten p.a. ~112 Mrd. USD
Laufendes Jahresdefizit ~2 Billionen USD
Gesamtrefinanzierungsbedarf ~10 Billionen USD
