Germany’s political firewall is developing cracks – and from within its own ranks. Bernd Prange (59), a CDU local politician, mayor of the Altmärkische Höhe municipality in the Stendal district and a member of the Christian Democrats for 35 years, has attacked his party and its chairman Chancellor Friedrich Merz in an open letter – and is calling for a vote for the AfD.

“It was a conscious step, taken after careful consideration, out of deep concern for our country,”

Prange writes in his letter. He has donated a total of €10,000 to the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt – two transfers of €5,000 each. In the state election on September 6, he intends to cast his vote for the far-right party.

The Reasoning: “CDU Is Moving to the Left”

Prange, who has been a member of the Stendal district council since 1999 and has served as local mayor for 32 years, justifies his move with a deep alienation from his party:

“The CDU is no longer my home and my future.”

He feels that conservative values such as performance, order, security, national sovereignty, economic reason and the protection of cultural identity are increasingly underrepresented in the CDU. Instead, he experiences:

The CDU in Saxony-Anhalt responded immediately with sharp criticism. Secretary General Mario Karschunke threatened Prange with expulsion proceedings:

Die politische Brandmauer in Deutschland bekommt Risse – und zwar aus den eigenen Reihen. Bernd Prange (59), CDU-Kommunalpolitiker, Ortsbürgermeister der Gemeinde Altmärkische Höhe im Landkreis Stendal und seit 35 Jahren Mitglied der Christdemokraten, hat in einem offenen Brandbrief seine Partei und deren Vorsitzenden Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz attackiert – und ruft zur Wahl der AfD auf.

„Es war ein bewusster, nach reiflicher Überlegung gefasster Schritt aus tiefer Sorge um unser Land“,

schreibt Prange in seinem Brief. Er habe der AfD in Sachsen-Anhalt insgesamt 10.000 Euro gespendet – zwei Überweisungen in Höhe von je 5.000 Euro. Bei der Landtagswahl am 6. September will er selbst sein Kreuz bei der Rechtsaußen-Partei machen.

Die Begründung: „CDU bewegt sich nach links“

Prange, der seit 1999 dem Kreistag Stendal angehört und seit 32 Jahren Ortsbürgermeister ist, begründet seinen Schritt mit einer tiefen Entfremdung von seiner Partei:

„Die CDU ist nicht mehr meine Heimat und Zukunft“.

In der CDU sehe er konservative Werte wie Leistung, Ordnung, Sicherheit, nationale Souveränität, wirtschaftliche Vernunft und den Schutz der kulturellen Identität immer weniger vertreten. Stattdessen erlebe er:

„Eine Partei, die sich Schritt für Schritt nach links bewegt, ihre Brandmauer zur AfD immer höher zieht und gleichzeitig eine Zusammenarbeit mit linken und linksradikalen Kräften akzeptiert oder sogar forciert“.

Er habe die berechtigte Sorge, „dass Teile der CDU dieses Land und ihre eigene Partei an die Linken verraten und verkaufen“.

Die Forderung: „Merz muss abgesetzt werden“

Prange wird deutlich:

„Ich wünsche mir, dass die AfD bei der Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt so stark wird, dass sie alleine regieren kann. Nicht aus Trotz, sondern damit die CDU endlich aufwacht. Damit die Brandmauer fällt. Damit sich die Partei gegen ihren Linkskurs wehrt“.

Und er fordert die Ablösung von Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz:

„Damit Friedrich Merz abgesetzt wird – als Symbol einer Führung, die den konservativen Kern der Union preisgibt“.

Sein Ziel: „Ich will, dass sie mich rausschmeißen“. Prange will nicht selbst austreten – er will von seiner Partei ausgeschlossen werden.

Die Reaktion der CDU: Parteiausschlussverfahren droht

Die CDU Sachsen-Anhalt reagierte umgehend mit scharfer Kritik. Generalsekretär Mario Karschunke drohte Prange mit einem Parteiausschlussverfahren:

„Sollte sich der Vorgang bewahrheiten, stellt dies für uns einen sehr schwerwiegenden parteirechtlichen Vorgang dar“.

Niemand sei gezwungen, Mitglied der CDU zu bleiben, wenn er ihre politischen Grundüberzeugungen nicht mehr teile.

Der Vorgang kommt für die CDU zur Unzeit. Wenige Wochen vor der Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt am 6. September steht die AfD in Umfragen bei 42 Prozent – die CDU nur bei 22 Prozent.

Die AfD wäre damit klar stärkste Kraft und könnte unter bestimmten Umständen sogar die absolute Mehrheit der Sitze im Landtag erringen. Die Geldspende mit Wahlempfehlung sage „mehr über den Zustand der CDU aus, als Bundeskanzler Merz lieb sein könne“. AfD-Spitzenkandidat Siegmund hatte die erste Spende von Prange bereits Ende Juli bei seinem Wahlkampfauftakt öffentlich gemacht – damals ohne den Spender zu nennen.
