THE DISCOVERY

On the fifth anniversary of the devastating suicide bombing at the Abbey Gate of Kabul Airport, which killed 13 U.S. service members and approximately 170 Afghan civilians, the chairman of the Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel, Sean Parnell, made an explosive statement.

Parnell, a senior advisor to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, said his team had recovered “highly relevant classified documents” – material that should have been disclosed earlier. The documents had been stored in safes where they were not meant to be found.

THE REVIEW PANEL

The Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel was established in May 2025 by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The panel is tasked with re-examining the circumstances of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Abbey Gate attack. Parnell, an Afghanistan veteran, was appointed to lead it.

The panel’s work follows a supplementary review by U.S. Central Command in April 2024 that confirmed the original investigations. That review concluded that the attack could not have been prevented at the tactical level.

But the newly discovered classified documents could now raise new questions – and potentially challenge earlier conclusions. Parnell said the panel would follow the evidence “wherever it leads and whomever it affects.”

August 26, 2021 – the day of the attack – has become a symbol for Republicans of the failure of Joe Biden’s foreign policy. Hegseth had previously upgraded the awards for the soldiers who served at Abbey Gate and accused the Biden administration of “inappropriately downgrading” the original honors.

Democrats, however, see the investigations as a one-sided campaign against the Biden administration. The White House had described the withdrawal from Afghanistan as one of the “most shameful and heartbreaking moments” in recent history.

Parnell himself suggested that the documents point to “inappropriate actions” by the previous administration.

Am fünften Jahrestag des verheerenden Selbstmordanschlags am Abbey Gate des Flughafens Kabul, bei dem 13 US-Soldaten und etwa 170 afghanische Zivilisten getötet wurden, gab der Vorsitzende des Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel, Sean Parnell, eine explosive Erklärung ab.

Die Wahrheit, die in diesen Safes liegt, wird dabei wahrscheinlich zur politischen Munition – nicht zur Grundlage einer ernsthaften Aufarbeitung.

Eines aber ist klar: Die Opfer des Abbey Gate – 13 US-Soldaten und etwa 170 Afghanen – haben eine vollständige Aufklärung verdient. Nicht nur eine, die nach parteipolitischen Interessen gefärbt ist.
