The EU Commission plans to overturn all existing IT security measures. The plan: automatic scans of all content on the Internet and the use of “artificial intelligence” are to fight crime. The regulation was announced by EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson for the beginning of December. A group of academic experts called the goals of the EU Commission’s monitoring plans simply “illusory”.
New escalation level
In fact, the EU is thereby establishing a “police state regime”. In addition, one creates a gateway for secret services and cyber gangs, warn the experts in the study entitled “Bugs in our pockets”.
Facebook and Apple soon abandoned the voluntary field test. Scanning all images before uploading resulted in a large number of incorrect hits. The EU’s plans also include scanning text messages and chats. In July 2020, EU plans were also announced to lift end-to-end encryption. This advance also caused outrage. The new regulation is “far more insidious than all previous approaches such as key deposit”. Preventive mass scans are even more violent than monitoring individual telephones. Everything should be scanned around the clock, without specific suspicion and without a court order. This means that a “red line” has been crossed.
Edward Snowden, who is in exile in Russia, is certain: “If you weaken encryption, people die,” the former secret agent wrote in a statement.
“I learned firsthand how governments can abuse their power to access innocent people’s personal information in the name of national security,” said Snowden. “Weak encryption would be a colossal mistake that could endanger thousands of lives.”
Even if politicians rightly claim that criminals use encryption, so would suppressed demonstrators or people who are discriminated against. Politicians who wanted to put Snowden in jail would also use encryption, as would journalists, to protect their sources. “Encryption makes us all safer,” says Snowden.
