THE ATTACK: REALITY ON LARAK

Hours before Trump’s post, U.S. forces had indeed struck military targets in Iran — but not on Kharg, rather on the strategically significant island of Larak. A U.S. official confirmed to Axios that the strikes targeted Iranian launch ramps that were apparently being prepared for deploying sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. It was the first known U.S. strike on Iranian territory since late July.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed casualties and immediately vowed retaliation. The reality of the war had thus reached a new level of escalation.

Trump had previously named Kharg as a strategic target on multiple occasions. The island, which before the war handled around 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports, is considered the “crown jewel” of Iran’s oil economy. An attack on it would deal a massive economic blow to Iran.

Iran’s leadership responded with mockery. The head of the National Iranian Oil Company, Hamid Bovard, stated: “Trump’s tweets are ridiculous. Stunden vor Trumps Post hatten US-Streitkräfte tatsächlich militärische Ziele im Iran attackiert – jedoch nicht auf Kharg, sondern auf der strategisch bedeutenden Insel Larak. Ein US-Beamter bestätigte gegenüber Axios, dass die Angriffe iranische Abschussrampen trafen, die offenbar für den Einsatz von Seeminen in der Straße von Hormuz vorbereitet wurden. Es war der erste bekannte US-Angriff auf iranisches Territorium seit Ende Juli.

Reuters bestätigte, dass das Video “höchstwahrscheinlich synthetisch generiert” wurde – also mit Hilfe von KI erstellt war. Es gibt keinerlei Beweise für einen tatsächlichen Angriff auf Kharg. Das Weiße Haus und das Pentagon reagierten nicht auf Anfragen.
