The enormous sets of ancient Egypt have become a Hollywood legend in themselves. The “City of the Pharaohs” was constructed of wood and plaster in the Guadalupe Dunes, an 18-mile stretch of coastal sand 170 miles north of L.A. The sets featured four 35-foot-tall statues of the Pharaoh Ramses, 21 five-ton sphinxes, and city walls over 120 feet high. An army of 2,500 actors, extras, carpenters, plasterers, painters, cooks, staff, and film crew members inhabited the set for three months, housed in a virtual army camp that featured nearly 1,000 tents. (3,500 animals, used in recreating the scenes of ancient Egypt, were housed in a huge corral downwind of the camp.) When shooting wrapped, Cecil B. DeMille simply had the massive Egyptian city sets bulldozed, and buried in a huge pit beneath the sand, where they remain to this day. For years, the legendary “Lost City of DeMille” was spoken of by locals in Guadalupe who had worked on the film set. Artifacts from the Egyptian sets were found in the dunes, and can sometimes be found in local houses in the area. (DeMille even said in his autobiography, “If 1,000 years from now, archaeologists happen to dig beneath the sands of Guadalupe, I hope that they will not rush into print with the amazing news that Egyptian civilization extended all the way to the Pacific Coast of North America.”) In 1983, documentary filmmaker Peter Brosnan located the remains of the DeMille sets, still buried beneath the dunes. The site is now recognized as an official archaeological site by the state of California, and it is against the law to remove artifacts from the site. Brosnan has been trying for many years to raise money from the Hollywood studios to excavate the site, but so far has been unable to do so.

It is told that Hiram Moore (John Elliott), a miserly rancher, has a treasure hidden on his property and that a map to its location is hidden in his portrait. He dies in debt and prospective buyers are scared away by rumors that the ranch is haunted by his ghost. A spectral rider is seen on the ranch at night. A year after his death, his granddaughter, Jeanne Moore (Beth Marion), arrives from Santa Fe to assert her claim to the property. She meets Jerry Lane (Tom Tyler), who has just sold his ranch and stock, and wants to buy a ranch in the area. At the public auction, Jerry outbids both Jeanne and some crooks who are trying to get the ranch. Jrry invites Jeanne to stay at the ranch, and hires a Cockney, Eddie Parsons (Sammy Cohen), as his valet. Perdita (Soledad Jimenez), the ranch housekeeper is a spy for Brandon (Forrest Taylor), a rival rancher. Pedita helps Brandon steal the portrait, but Eddie, a kleptomaniac, has already swiped the map which was hidden in the portrait frame. Accordinng to the map, the treasure is buried at Tower Rock and can only be found under the light of a full moon. The moon turns full a week later. Tex, a gang member who has been impersonating the ghostly rider for Brandon, threatens to tell Jerry the truth. He is shot by Brandon’s foreman, Mark Graydon (Charles King) and Brandon frames Jerry for the murder.

William Powell is entertaining as always. Eugene Palette is wonderful as the detective. This movie is well acted by all. Probably the best Philo Vance, and there were many of them. Powell is by far the best, although Warren william was good, too. The plot is great and it’s not easy figuring out whodunit! The whole movie is so clever, I highly recommend this for all William Powell fans, in my top 10 favorite murder mysteries!

William Powell is excellent as Philo Vance in “The Kennel Murder Case.” An excellent plot, well paced, with the mystery holding until the end. Eugene Pallette does his usual good job in the main supporting role. Overall, an enjoyable film, which holds up after 77 years.

Subject: Best of the 4 Philo Vance movies

This was William Powell working up his Thin Man characterization. In the Philo Vance movies he starts out obviously trying to find a way to play a playboy detective. As he moves through the 4 movies you can see him begin to really hit his stride in the 3rd movie. In ‘The Kennel Murder Case’, you can see he has the role figured out, and is playing it with gusto. When he lands the Thin Man role, it is obviously because of his Philo Vance characterization in this movie. It’s too bad he didn’t keep doing more Philo Vance movies as well; then we would have twice as many great William Powell detective movies to watch. Enjoy this one, it’s a peach!

This baffling murder mystery has Van Dine’s detective Philo Vance solve a case with a surfeit of suspects and evidence with few clues. William Powell, as always, is great as the detective. The story moves quickly at the beginning, then slows but stays engaging. The ending seemed weak.

I downloaded the DivX file, which showed lots of dirt and scratches, is somewhat washed out, but is still easy to watch. The audio is fine.

For a PRC film with limited production values The Missing Corpse isn’t too bad of a film. It also stars the tragic J. Edward Bromberg in one of the films you’ll find this character player top billed.

Bromberg and Paul Guilfoyle are rival tabloid publishers and Guilfoyle has printed some nasty stuff about Bromberg’s daughter. Reacting like an outraged father, Bromberg promises to do him harm if any more should be printed.

Then Guilfoyle winds up dead and in Bromberg’s car trunk. They discover it when Bromberg goes up to his hunting cabin for a short vacation. They being Bromberg and chauffeur Frank Jenks.

Not much suspense here since we know who killed Guilfoyle. Still a few laughs from the cast especially Bromberg and Jenks.

Not bad considering it’s a PRC cheapie.

A film in two parts – at least half, probably more – is devoted to music – either by songster Tex Ritter or by the great Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys or Ritter with the Playboys. There’s even song and squeezebox accompaniment by Ritter’s sidekick Slim Whitaker, who also provides a bit of humor.. Fortunately, the music is good. Wheezy old Bob McKenzie (Deacon Ames) also provides the humor. The rest of the film has to do with the deceitful nice guy, perennial villain Karl Hackett (Storm) trying to wrest control of the stagecoach contract from pretty Terry Walker (Jane Winters). As things progress from Tex as hero at the beginning, he loses the trust of his friend Carlton Young (Ace) who sees Ritter as a rival for Walker, gets framed for robbery by Hackett, who also sends for hired gun Olin Frances (Mule Bates) to kill Ritter and is wanted by the sheriff. Whew! Finally, the last 7 or 8 minutes is all action with a stagecoach race and murder attempts, before Ritter and friends triumph. Worth sitting through, if just for the music.

First of all this film was produced and distributed in 1938, and is not a 1941 production. The exhibitors and various censor boards objected to the original title, “The Sunset Strip Case” (because of the double meaning that implied a strip on Sunset rather than the name of the street, which is exactly what the producer had in mind when he hired fan-dancer Sally Rand, the hit of the Chicago Exposition and the later Texas Centennial), and Boston promptly banned the film, as Boston was often subject to do with far less reason than they had with this film. The film was tied up in law suits across the country brought against the various blue-nose boards who also blocked its showing, and all this was going on during the collapse of Grand National with GN president E. W. Hammons being hauled to court by exhibitors and creditors, including the production unit headed by this film’s producer George A. Hirliman. The latter produced it for Grand National distribution, but Grand National had no distribution left when Hirliman finally got it cleared for showing in New York in 1941 under the title of “The Sunset Murder Case”…and it was distributed through indie exchanges in 1941 as Grand National had long folded its tent. It still carried the Grand National logo, which evidently has fooled the source that keeps calling this a 1941 production, and showing it as being distributed by an entity that no longer existed. The cast order shown on the 1941 prints is no way reflective of the cast order shown on original release. Excuse the use of Plot Summary to explain why this is not a 1941 film, but that is beginning to appear to be the only way to get this film into its proper decade. The plot summary, albeit skimpy, already on site will suffice for the plot. Be advised that Sally Rand was slower with her fans and showed more flesh in a later-Soundies short film than she does here. This one ran into trouble in 1938 because of her name and not what she actually showed, although she showed more than was custom in 1938…or 1948 or 1958 for that matter.

Death Rides a Horse (Italian: Da uomo a uomo, lit. ‘As man to man’) is a 1967 Italian Spaghetti Western directed by Giulio Petroni, written by Luciano Vincenzoni and starring Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law.

Bill (John Phillip Law), a boy whose father was killed and mother and sister were raped and murdered in front of him by a gang, sets out 15 years later to exact revenge, having used the time to become an expert marksman with a gun. Each of the outlaws bears a characteristic that Bill memorized while watching his family slaughtered and his house set on fire: the first has a tattoo of four aces on his chest, the second a scar, the third one a distinctive earring and the fourth (who was the one who saved young Bill from the burning house) wears a necklace bearing a skull; while he saw the face of the fifth, he never saw the face of the man who saved him from the fire.

As he begins his journey, a gunfighter named Ryan (Lee Van Cleef) is released from a prison after serving 15 years there. He was framed for an armed robbery by the very same men who murdered Bill’s family. When they meet along the way, Ryan gets the better of Bill, who is blinded by vengeance, but he does Bill no harm. In the next town, Ryan asks for a man named Cavanaugh (Anthony Dawson), whom Bill recognized later as the man with four aces tattoo. Bill manages to kill Cavanaugh in a duel, but the more experienced Ryan insists on tracking the other outlaws alone. They cross paths again in Lyndon City, where Ryan meets rich banker named Walcott (Luigi Pistilli) and demands his share of the robbery 15 years ago. Walcott stages a robbery on his own bank and frames Ryan. When the tables are turned later, Bill reciprocates, helping Ryan escape from a jail. An equally determined Bill sets out ahead of him.

Bill reaches a Mexican town, where he recognizes the man with the big earring and guns him down. He is captured by the outlaws, beaten and buried alive from the neck down (he had also recognized the man with the scar and Walcott). Left to die in the hot sun, he is rescued by Ryan, who shoots several men standing guard. Preparing for the gang’s return, Bill notices that Ryan is wearing a necklace with a skull. Ryan admits he was present during the murders, but arrived late and did not participate; he also rescued Bill from the fire. He gives his word that once the outlaws have been dealt with, he will remain to face whatever justice Bill seeks.

In a final shootout during a sand storm, the last remaining man who killed Bill’s family has him dead to rights, only to be killed by Ryan’s thrown knife. Bill nonetheless insists on revenge. Ryan’s gun is empty, so Bill tosses a bullet to him. He has just one bullet left now himself. Ryan turns his back and walks away, daring Bill to shoot him in the back. Bill fires, but it is only to kill a surviving outlaw. A grateful Ryan then watches as he mounts his horse and rides away.

Reefer Madness – Full Original Movie

Considered THE archetypal sensationalized anti-drug movie, but it’s really an exploitation film made to capitalize on the hot taboo subject of marijuana use. Like many exploitation films of the time, “Reefer Madness” tried to make a quick buck off of a forbidden subject while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930. The Code forbade the portrayal of immoral acts like drug use. (The illegal drug traffic must not be portrayed in such a way as to stimulate curiosity concerning the use of, or traffic in, such drugs; nor shall scenes be approved which show the use of illegal drugs, or their effects, in detail.)

The film toured around the country for many years – often being re-edited and re-titled (“Tell Your Children”, “Dope Addict”, “Doped Youth”, “Love Madness”, “The Burning Question”). It was re-discovered in the early 1970s by NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and screened again as an example of the government’s demonization of marijuana. NORML may have been confused about the film’s sponsorship since one of the film’s distributors, Dwain Esper, testified to the Arizona Supreme Court that “Reefer Madness” was not a trashy exploitation film but was actually sponsored by the U.S. Government – a convincing lie, but a lie nonetheless.

That being said, the film is still quick enjoyable since it dramatizes the “violent narcotic’s … soul destroying” effects on unwary teens, and their hedonistic exploits enroute to the bottom.
