Within Our Gates (1920) is a silent race film that dramatically expresses the racial situation in America during the violent years of Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan, the Great Migration, and the emergence of the “New Negro”. The story focuses on an African-American woman who goes North in an effort to help a minister in the Deep South raise money to keep a school open for poor Black children. Her romance with a black doctor eventually leads to revelations about her family’s past that expose the racial skeletons in America’s closet, most famously through the film’s depiction of a lynching. Produced, written and directed by novelist Oscar Micheaux, it is the oldest known surviving film made by an African-American director.

THE ELO CONCERT, SEPTEMBER 14: WATCH THE GREAT COME BACK OF JEFF LYNNE/ELO FOLLOWING THE WISH OF THE PEOPLE 🙂 I had shivers when watching this broadcast of Jeff Lynne and his Electric Light Orchestra play live in Hyde Park, September 14, for example when they played the last number “Roll over Beethoven” and Jeff was rocking on his guitar while the 50,000 people of the crowd were dancing and Richard Tandy was hitting the notes perfectly on the piano together with a great playing band – even though I had liked to see the original line up “coming back” – and also the BBC concert orchestra, which I liked very much to see and hear (but I missed the Gareth Malone Voices Choir at the parts of the music requiring a beautiful choir to bring ALL of the original ELO experience, for example the end of Mr. Blue Sky), a beautiful LIGHT SHOW including the Spaceship of ELO (symbolising the Source), the skyline of London around Hyde Park and not least, I was happy to see Jeff’s great happiness to perform and his surprise when seeing 50,000 happy people warmly welcoming and reaching out for him, and yes, I truly like Jeff’s humour and kindness very much, I almost feel that I know “him” :-).
Jeff/ELO did a few shows in 2001 after the Zoom album, but else we have to go back to 1986 since he did some live concerts, and all the way back to 1982 since I saw “the good old ELO” live in Copenhagen on the Time-tour, and TIME it is for “a great comeback”, my friends :-).
So this was truly a HISTORIC show when Jeff returned in brilliant style following a request from BBC and the people saying “we want you back”, and he did as the people required from him, “I’m back”. THANK YOU, Jeff, Richard & Co. for an almost perfect show – I love to see you in Copenhagen and follow you on your coming World Tour :-).
Later: A TRULY MARVELOUS AND STUNNING PERFORMANCE I finished doing the last details to my website this afternoon, and watched the whole concert for the first time hereafter, and this is when I really started to appreciate it with my fullest, and yes, listen to SHOWDOWN as example as one of the highlights, and yes the BBC Orchestra is simply FANTASTIC, and together with the amazing ELO-arrangements they do the whole difference to me, live strings are simply magical, Jeff, and yes, the violin solo at the beginning of Livin’ Thing is so beautiful that it can make one cry, and again also in Sweet Talking Woman as another highlight, this is what dreams are made of, this is the absolutely finest music that I know of, and yes, we know Stig, it is in a class of itself, and Stepin’ out is so beautiful that it almost makes me cry (again), Jim (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_lYFhFHVQM).
This is a truly MARVELOUS performance, Jeff and the band are nailing it, they bring new and FRESH life to these old songs that have never sounded better than now, and yes, the band and the songs are sounding nothing less than THE MOST WONDERFUL I have heard, I love the drummer, also the two chorus singers, and yes yes yes, all of the band for their happiness and skills when playing, and watch the Spaceship flying freely behind Jeff in Livin’ Thing, isn’t it just incredible, and yes, the whole thing, you know 🙂 🙂 :-).
Days later: Music is (was) my life and this concert is by far the best I have ever seen, even though I was not present and have only watched it on video, and in this sense you may say that this very concert was the greatest experience of my (old) life, and it was used to LIFT ME UP to become my new self as the Source (“the spaceship of everything” containing all life/creation including the force of the Source, which is what the ELO spaceship symbolizes) by bringing the deepest feelings inside of me when watching it, and furthermore this may be my favourite song of Jeff’s and certainly it is the most symbolic to me to lift me up and “finish what I started” (my whole mission), and when writing this, I remember how my LTO friends in Kenya used to LOVE this song VERY MUCH, and when I played it to Elijah’s small children, they could not help dancing and smiling all over their faces, which is really what TRUE life is all about, to bring you eternal JOY and HAPPINESS without sufferings, and this is what is coming now when I will open the eyes of my new self 🙂 🙂 :-).
Update October 20, 2014: I uploaded the new 720p HQ version (after a re-run on BBC that a kind man recorded and uploaded to YouTube from where I have it) and watched the concert again having tears in my eyes all the way through because, as I thought, this is how ELO was supposed to sound and look like all along as I have had in my mind since I was a boy, and I told myself that this is indeed the finest songs of all that I know of – despite of what I write about other music that I also love – and I could have included Mr. Blue Sky or another great ELO-song as “the best song ever” on my list, the ending of Mr. Blue Sky is the most incredible of all songs still giving me a VERY BIG lump in my throat with massive tears pressuring on when I am now hearing/seeing it again, but I did not, this honour goes to David Bowie with “Heroes” :-).
ELO is and has been number 1 on my Top 100 list of favourite artists since 1978 as you can see and listen to on Spotify here and “Out of the Blue” is number 1 on my Top 100 list of favourite albums, which also could have been “Time” or “Armchair Theatre“, as you can see and listen to here.

Le Voyage Dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon) by Georges Méliès (1902)
George Melies’s `A Trip to the Moon’ welcomes a change in film making of the twentieth century. Combined with live action as well as models, the movie tells a story about astronauts who take a trip to the moon. The moon, having a human face captures the astronauts after they crash into its eye. They later escape the moon and it’s moon-men and make it back to earth safely. Melies wrote, directed and starred in this movie. He used many important techniques in his films to make them successful. Not only did he develop editing skills and superimposed images, he also used double exposure to complete the magic behind his films. In her book, former GDR civil rights activist Freya Klier recalls the political murders committed by the State Security, which terrorized an entire nation as the “shield and sword” of the SED. The fates described get under the skin – and have lost none of their social significance even 32 years after the fall of the Wall.
The civil rights activist Freya Klier, born in 1950 in Dresden, arrested several times in the GDR and finally expatriated, has written a new book. It deals with the political murders and attempted murders by the State Security Service, or Stasi for short. In stirring descriptions, the author exposes the inhuman nature of the GDR secret service, which spied on, harassed and terrorized millions of East Germans on behalf of the state party SED – and committed dozens of homicides.
Klier’s work could not have appeared at a better time – shortly before the Bundestag elections on September 26, 2021.
Freya Klier: Book about Stasi murders and brutal GDR regime The reason: The Left Party, which has now been in the Bundestag for 16 years, is preparing to assume government responsibility for all of Germany – more offensively, more confidently than ever before. And large sections of the SPD and the Greens are welcoming the repeatedly renamed successor party to the SED with open arms.
However, the Left is not merely a party that wants to radically change our economic and social order. It is also a party that still has an unresolved relationship with its dark past, i.e., its predecessor party. Several members, right up to the leadership level, stubbornly refuse to call the GDR an unjust state and instead glorify the old system.
Author Klier was lucky to survive assassination attempt in 1987 There is no question that the SED regime committed massive and systematic injustice. Even if the GDR officially guaranteed its citizens freedom of speech, freedom of assembly or freedom of the press – if it went against its own interests, the state trampled such rights underfoot. With the Ministry of State Security, the SED had created a monster that secured its rule – among other things by forcibly removing disfavored citizens from the way.
In her book “Unter mysteriösen Umständen. Die politischen Morde der Staatssicherheit” (Herder Verlag), Freya Klier allows many eyewitnesses and victims to have their say, shedding light on a chapter of GDR history that has so far been very sparsely illuminated. Klier herself survived an assassination attempt in 1987 only by luck. The Stasi had tampered with her and her husband’s car, setting the stage for a serious accident. Klier’s brother was driven to suicide by the Stasi henchmen.
The author’s intention with her book is not to legally “prove” murders and assassinations. Rather, she wants to “set a monument” to the victims. She speaks of about 70 dissidents, pastors and writers who died an unnatural death in the GDR. “Others are seriously ill or are wasting away in some way” – obvious late effects of years of Stasi terror.
Klier takes up prominent fates, such as that of Michael Gartenschläger. He was shot by a special Stasi commando in 1976 when he tried to dismantle a self-firing device at the border. Quote: “The commando awaits him, sees his silhouette. As Michael ducks toward the border fence, he walks directly into the muzzle flash. Four men empty their magazines – just as they vowed to do. Riddled with gunfire, the 32-year-old dies on the death strip.”
Operation “Scorpion”: Enemy of the State Should Be Liquidated The case of Wolfgang Welsch is also shocking. Sentenced to ten years in prison after a failed escape attempt in 1964, he was mistreated and psychologically tortured in GDR jail; the prison warden even staged a mock execution to wear the inmate down. In 1971, the German government bought Welsch’s freedom. But he found no peace in the West either. The Stasi opened the Central Operative Procedure (ZOV) “Scorpion” – Welsch was to be decomposed and finally liquidated.
Freya Klier notes in her book, “With a lot of luck, the persecuted survived three assassination attempts between 1979 and 1981, the last of which is probably the most famous – thallium poisoning by means of meatballs at an Israeli campsite.” Before that, the Stasi killers had tried explosives, then a sniper.
Driven to suicide: Klier’s brother took his own life Klier’s book also addresses the high suicide rate in the GDR. About 5,000 people killed themselves each year, including many women, men and young people “who could no longer stand the harassment of the state authorities.” One of them was Klier’s brother. At the age of 30, he took his own life, pulverized by forced stays in prison and closed psychiatric wards. “He discovered an empty house near our apartment where the gas line was still working. There he puts his head in a gas oven.”
An obvious Stasi murder moves not only Freya Klier to this day, but also the victim’s family, friends, acquaintances: The strangulation of political prisoner Matthias Domaschk in 1981. He died in a dark prison cell in Gera, Thuringia.
Matthias Domaschk: Expert believes in “strangulation from behind The Stasi informed Domaschk’s parents that their son had “hanged himself from a heating pipe shortly before he was to be released.” Klier in her book: “That Stasi people killed him and then hanged him to deceive him, nobody doubts that.”
This thesis is supported by an analysis of the renowned forensic pathologist Michael Tsokos from Berlin. After studying the Stasi documents available to him, the expert expressed “some doubts” about the official cause of death “hanging”. From his point of view, another possibility comes into consideration – “a strangulation from behind”.
In addition to other moving fates of victims of the GDR secret service, the author dedicates herself in detail to the topic of poison murders, in particular the hauntingly effective “Toxdat poison file.”
The “Killer Project” Eliminating Political Opponents with Poison Background: In 1987, Stasi deputy chief Gerhard Neiber commissioned two officers to research possible poison murders. The top-secret project was called “Toxdat.” In this way, the Stasi looked for ways to “make life extremely difficult for resistant citizens or even to end it without their officers being identifiable as the perpetrators of the murders,” according to book author Freya Klier.
The more than 900-page Poison File describes exactly how more than 200 toxic substances are to be administered in such a way that they lead to death in a barely detectable manner. Among other things, attacks with radioactive poisons such as uranium or plutonium, radionuclides from strontium-90 to plutonium-238, but also with tiny amounts of spent fuel rods from nuclear power plants are described.
Eigendorf and Berger: They too were hit by the Stasi poison dart The collection also includes the contact poison used on professional soccer player Lutz Eigendorf in Braunschweig in 1983, which led to a fatal car accident. And probably also the soccer coach Jörg Berger, who came from the GDR, was a victim of a poison attack. In 1986, Berger suffered from mysterious symptoms of paralysis in Aachen. At the time, it was believed to be a viral infection.
Years later, Munich forensic pathologist Wolfgang Eisenmenger analyzed Berger’s medical records against the background of the Toxdat study. His unequivocal finding was that Berger had been poisoned. “If one appreciates the clinical picture, heavy metals from the group of lead compounds and arsenic compounds come into consideration above all.” Berger died of colon cancer in 2010, at 65.
The criminal Stasi just a GDR fossil? Not at all! To deal with atrocities committed by the Stasi on behalf of the SED 32 years after the fall of the Wall may not seem sensible and urgent to everyone. Some will object: What does that have to do with the present? What does it concern us?
The answer: a great deal.
The topics of SED dictatorship and Stasi crimes did not simply disappear with the end of the GDR. They have a profound effect right up to our own time. Freya Klier had to painfully experience this firsthand.
Merciless GDR lawyer active in SED successor party After reunification, an elderly woman contacted her family and asked for an apology. It was that merciless GDR prosecutor who had accused Freya Klier’s then 17-year-old brother of a trivial offense, whereupon he was sentenced to four years in prison. Continually harassed by the state power, he later took his own life.
The bottom line: The ex-state prosecutor was later active for the SED’s successor party, the PDS. In doing so, she “unabashedly praised the GDR and its humanity,” according to author Klier, “and then lashed out at the capitalist West with its contempt for humanity.”

A pretty good digital copy of the reconstruction of this difficult-to-find film. Its problems, especially with the title screens (and the apparently abscounded sound track) notwithstanding, well worth watching here. Although I strongly dislike “best of all time”-type polls, in this case “La Passion” deserves its regular appearance at or near the top of such lists. Falconetti’s performance is peerless by any standard, the cinematography is magnificent, and the film’s naturalism is simply astonishing given the typical practices of the day (1925!). If you do not know this work, invest the time & concentration to give it a fair viewing & it just might change your life. It will at least profoundly alter your understanding of what a driven director can accomplish with very modest means. The final scenes, with Jeanne at the stake, just may not have any equal. And by the way, the script is largely taken verbatim from the actual transcript of her trial, so while Dreyer certainly has a particular point of view and espouses it with a somewhat melodramatic presentation (remember, 1925), the film is as historically accurate as almost any “documentary.”

The actor Florian Treichtmeister, who is particularly popular among the left-wing chic scene and has won countless awards, hoarded more than 56,000 (!) pieces of child pornography on various data carriers over the past 15 years. It was only thanks to his ex-girlfriend that this circumstance came to light through her report. Because (green) politics and left-wing cultural workers knew already since 2021 (!) of investigations against the “TV star”. Whether children were also abused by the actor is still unclear.
The Freedom Party sharply attacks First Lady Doris Schmidauer.
Meanwhile, even Austrian mainstream media are asking themselves the anxious question, “What did Doris Schmidauer know?” the eternally clueless grinning wife of Federal President Van der Bellen.

“The Burgtheater has absolute argumentation emergency. Here I would like to know what actually happened. Ms. Schmidauer should also come out of her silence for once and explain what happened.
The second FPÖ secretary general Michael Schnedlitz also demands full clarification:
“Even if Treichtmeister has dismissed the accusations to the Burgtheater as baseless rumors and an act of revenge by an ex-girlfriend: Why wasn’t he suspended until clarification? The Bundestheaterholding was supposedly informed, but was the Burgtheater’s supervisory board also informed? And if so, what did the members, including prominent names like Doris Schmidauer, after all the wife of the Federal President, have to say about it?”

As has now become known, investigations into the Treichtmeister case are likely to have been known to both the Green-led Department of Culture under Green State Secretary Andrea Mayer and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler, who is also Green, as well as left-wing cultural workers at the Burgtheater and the Bundestheater-Holding since September 2021. The pedophile actor was therefore apparently covered by the political side and the cultural scene.

It further became known that the lawyer of a mother of a child with whom Teichtmeister was filming contacted the director of the film “Serviam” in October 2021 and sued for an injunction against Teichtmeister taking photos of the child. Teichtmeister allegedly photographed children on the film sets and privately captioned those photos with speech bubbles that included phatnasies of violence and rape.
Austria’s federal government is overflowing with expressions of dismay and calls for stricter punishments and laws following the widening pedophile scandal involving actor Teichtmeister. It was the politicians themselves who helped to cover up the case from the public.
They now want to extend the sentencing range for possession of child pornography from two years to up to five years. Teichtmeister could even be spared a prison sentence. In the case of left-wing cuddly justice and since he is so far blameless, remorseful and confessed, a suspended sentence would also be possible.
The defense attorney of the pedophile actor, the lawyer and constitutional judge (!) Michael Rami, is also causing a stir. This described the act of his client as a “pure digital offense”. “This legal opinion is not only morally reprehensible, it is also a mockery of all children to whom cruel, sexualized violence was inflicted in front of a running camera,” Sepp Rothwangl of the platform “Betroffener kirchlicher Gewalt” said of the statements.
Whether Teichtmeister was or is part of a pedophile network (and into which elite circles these connections went) has strangely been largely left out of the debate so far. And this despite the fact that the amount of seized material (over 56,000 files) clearly indicates this. Teichtmeister claims to have only obtained the child pornography from the darknet since 2008. Without backers or further buyers. But other actors are said to be involved.

The latest findings in the Techtmeister case leave even experienced observers speechless at the audacity and negligence involved. Thus, the pedophile actor not only filmed with children AFTER the investigations, he was also invited as a guest of honor (!) to the parliament to read texts of victims there in 2016 as part of a state act on child abuse! Already since 2008, Techtmeister is known to have collected child pornography.

This is where commissioner Lohmann comes in, doing his best to trace down the roots of the terrorist groups. Strangely enough, the evidence seems to point towards – the asylum and Dr. Mabuse! The first half of this film is classic horror – through a visit to the asylum and a lecture by Baum we learn of Mabuse’s work. And when we, together with Lohmann, is introduced to Mabuse (locked up in his cell) and meet his maddened gaze…well, it’s a truly CHILLING moment! We also learn of how a young man with good intentions through poverty is forced to seek work in organized crime. While trying to leave the group he realizes there is only one way out: death. Another claustrophobic and suspenseful moment in the movie. Somewhere in the latter half of the movie things get a little out of hand. When the mystery with Mabuse’s influence on the outside world finally has been solved, some of the incredible dark atmosphere is lost. Instead we get more of a traditional crime/suspense-kind of film, and the high amount of plots makes the film drag on just a little too long. The eery atmosphere in the earlier parts of the movie, the fantastic expressionist style and many original and innovative moments makes this a ‘must-see’ for those with an interest for early German Cinema, or those looking for the roots to genres as horror and film noir. While the early parts of this movie is a definite masterpiece, the latter half feels somewhat flawed though.

One such initiative is based on a combination of an emerging W3C standard for Verifiable Credentials (VCs), non-standard decentralized identifiers (DIDs), and distributed ledger technology (DLT) or “blockchain.”¹
In this article, we examine why such proposed technological interventions lack sufficient supporting scientific and public health evidence or legitimacy. As a result, we believe such interventions, if adopted or implemented by public authorities, would pose an unjustified interference with, and serious threat to, our fundamental human rights and civil liberties, in violation of the principles of legality, necessity, and proportionality. In this article, we outline our concerns from a legal, public health-based, and technical perspective.
During the Second World War, many sides committed atrocities and executions that were unlawful and resulted in huge massacres. Some of the perpetrators of these war crimes were brought to trial after the Second World War had come to an end, however many more criminals never faced justice. During the conflict, History’s deadliest executioner dispatched thousands of prisoners of war in one of the most horrific massacres of World War 2. Vasily Blohkin is remembered today as History’s most prolific and deadliest executioner.
Inside of Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union, Blohkin rose to prominence as the Chief Executioner of the NKVD, and he carried out many of the high profile executions of Stalin’s purges. He was also responsible for the murders of thousands, and for torture but during World War 2 he was placed in charge of administering the Katyn Massacre. He was responsible for the executions of over 22,000 prisoners of war, and its claimed he personally shot around 7,000 of these men in efficient slaughter. He prided himself on how quick he could perform an execution, and during the horrific massacre he executed a Polish officer/prisoner every 3 minutes. The Katyn Massacre was one of the most shocking atrocities of the Second World War, and one of the largest collective murders organised by the Soviet Union. After the war, Blohkin continued to serve under Stalin’s police until the leader of the Soviet Union died. He then was stripped of his ranks, and fell into alcoholism and obscurity. Vasily Blohkin is remembered today for being the deadliest executioner in History.

• (U) The mass shooting last month targeting Black people in Buffalo, New York, was allegedly perpetrated by a racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist (RMVE) driven by a belief in the superiority of the white race. The RMVE was charged with federal hate crimes and using a firearm to commit murder in June 2022. This attack underscores how RMVEs—who have been responsible for a majority of DVE-related deaths since 2010—pose a significant threat of lethal violence against civilians, particularly of racial, ethnic, and religious minorities.
• (U) The lethal threat from militia violent extremists (MVEs) remains elevated, primarily toward government and law enforcement personnel, as MVEs remain willing to use violence to redress perceived government overreach and other sociopolitical grievances, judging from an increase in MVE plotting, disruptions, and FBI investigations since 2020. Anarchist violent extremists (AVEs) present a threat of sporadic violent physical assaults and property crimes impacting the efficient operation of critical infrastructure; developments that heighten perceptions of inequality or social injustice might further embolden AVEs to commit acts of violence.
• (U) Several DVEs motivated by perceptions of fraud in the 2020 general election were arrested in 2021 and 2022 for plotting or threatening violence against federal, state, and local officials and political party representatives, highlighting the elevated threat posed to elected officials countrywide. In November 2021, a New York–based MVE was sentenced to 19 months in prison for threatening to assault and murder members of the US Congress.
• (U) A wide-ranging set of DVEs have shared their perceptions of government overreach on COVID-19 pandemic mitigation efforts and anger at government responses to immigration issues in person and online and have encouraged one another to act violently. Anger at the mitigation efforts of businesses and federal, state, and local governments motivated several DVE attacks, plots, and calls for violence against health care workers and mobile vaccine clinics in 2020 and 2021. In 2021, some DVEs visited the US-Mexico border with the intention of detaining those crossing into the United States.

(U) Developments related to midterm elections, immigration, perceptions of government overreach or social injustice, and other flashpoint events will probably motivate some DVEs across ideologies to plot or attempt violence in the coming months. In the context of these events, some DVEs might promote or exploit the public prevalence of violent extremist narratives to encourage violence. DVE attackers and plotters are typically lone actors—individuals acting without the direct support of others—who plot or conduct attacks on soft targets using easily accessible weapons. The persistent difficulty of detecting threats from such actors underscores the value of the public’s assistance in identifying people who might be mobilizing to violence and in reporting concerning behavior to authorities before violence occurs.

(U) RMVEs Driven by Belief in the Superiority of the White Race Present Enduring Lethal Threat
(U) We assess that RMVEs who are driven by a belief in the superiority of the white race continue to pose the primary threat among DVEs of committing lethal violence against civilians, based on their ideology and attack history. These RMVEs advocate and commit violence in support of a transnational movement whose adherents believe that white people of European descent are superior to and threatened by minority populations, as well as by other whites whom they perceive as supporting these populations. Some of these RMVEs promote accelerationist thinking, which advocates committing violence to precipitate a large-scale conflict, often framed as a “race war,” in the United States and other Western democracies that these RMVEs believe will result in a white ethnostate.

(U) MVEs Pose Heightened Lethal Threat to Law Enforcement and Symbols of Government
(U) The lethal threat level from MVEs to law enforcement and government personnel will almost certainly remain elevated in the coming months because some of these actors are willing to use violence to redress perceived government overreach and other sociopolitical issues. Some MVEs will almost certainly continue to harbor grievances over their perceptions of fraud during the 2020 election and government measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some MVEs might also mobilize to violence in response to the enactment of any legislation that they perceive as restricting access to firearms, expanding immigration, or managing public land that MVEs might view as unacceptable infringements on civil liberties or harmful to the security of the United States.
