Olaf Scholz

The ex-SPD member of the Bundestag Johannes Kahrs has been under investigation for months. Now it comes out: investigators found 200,000 euros in a safe deposit box.

It is an explosive discovery that investigators have made in the safe deposit box at the Hamburger Sparkasse: There stored 200,000 euros in cash in bills of different sizes.

This is reported by the “Bild” newspaper. According to the report, the money had already been discovered last fall, when officials first searched Kahrs’ private apartment and the rooms of the tax authorities in Hamburg – and later the safe deposit box.

Journalist Oliver Schröm, whose book on the Cum-Ex case surrounding Warburg Bank (“Die Akte Scholz”) will be published in the fall, confirmed the discovery of the large sum of money to the “Tagesspiegel” newspaper. “It was specifically 214,800 euros and then another 2400 US dollars that were found in the safe deposit box.” He said he knew the investigative documents on the case.

According to the report, the investigators discovered the trail to the money during the search of Kahrs’ house: a rental agreement for a safe deposit box at the Hamburger Sparkasse bank. With a search warrant, this was finally opened on September 28, 2021.

Kahrs plays a decisive role in the Warburg Bank case. He is said to have been involved in the meetings between the then Mayor of Hamburg, Olaf Scholz, and the bank’s shareholders, Christian Olearius and Max Warburg. It is about those very meetings, the content of which the current Chancellor allegedly can no longer remember, as he testified in the investigative committee on the Cum-Ex scandal. After the first meeting, the City of Hamburg had allowed statutes of limitations to lapse, waiving back tax payments of 47 million euros by the bank.

Kahrs has so far not wanted to comment publicly on the media reports. “Mr. Kahrs in particular must now fully clarify the origin of the 200,000 euros. Otherwise, it must be suspected that these funds have a dark background,” said the deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Mathias Middelberg, the “Tagesspiegel”.

“This affair has the potential to topple the chancellor”.
Left-wing politician Fabio de Masi, who as a member of the Bundestag had pushed for clarification on the Wirecard case and is also very familiar with the case surrounding Warburg Bank, now sees the Chancellor under massive pressure. The politician told the “Tagesspiegel”: “The safe deposit box is explosive for the Chancellor.” He said there could only have been one reason for the large sum in the safe deposit box, namely that Kahrs did not want an electronic data trail on his account.

It would now be a matter of clarifying whether the SPD man had accepted money from the bank, also to Scholz there are now many open questions. The left-wing politician believes, “This affair has the potential to topple the chancellor.”

According to the “Tagesspiegel”, both the SPD leadership and the Chancellor’s Office left current questions about the money found with Kahrs unanswered.

Investigations against ex-SPD deputy: Officials find 200,000 euros in cash with Johannes Kahrs
According to the “Bild” report on Friday, the Cologne public prosecutor’s office sees the discovery of the money as an indication that Kahrs may have worked to save the Hamburg-based Warburg Bank, which was involved in illegal so-called cum-ex transactions, huge tax refunds amounting to millions. The reproach reads according to the report: Initial suspicion of the favor to the tax evasion.

In addition at present in Hamburg also a committee of inquiry runs. Kahrs repeatedly lobbied the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), the Federal Ministry of Finance and also the then Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz on behalf of Warburg Bank. Kahrs sat in the Bundestag until 2020. In May 2020, he had surprisingly resigned from all offices. He is regarded as a long-time companion of Scholz.
