Since last week, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has been using the facial recognition software of the controversial company Clearview. The technology can be used in Ukraine, among other things, to “combat misinformation, find out the names of Russian soldiers, and identify the dead.” Ukraine is allowed to use the services of Clearview, which has been heavily criticized by European privacy advocates, free of charge. In particular, the way in which the photos are included in the face database is the subject of much discussion. Clearview uses webscraper to collect photos that people have posted on the Internet. This has resulted in a database of 10 billion photos. Clearview is co-funded by notorious Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel, who sits on the steering committee that organizes the Bilderberg conference, among other things.

Also used in the EU.

Dutch police have already used the controversial facial recognition software “at least 50 times,” American media wrote last year. Former Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus wrote to the Chamber of Deputies that “the use of AI (artificial intelligence) in the police is not a luxury, but a necessity in order to continue to act effectively.” “It is to be expected that AI will eventually evolve into a widely accepted and used technology,” Grapperhaus wrote. “How nice that Clearview offers this for free. A nice process, because it also fits wonderfully into the surveillance society, which is building up at a rapid pace,” replies MP Daniël Osseweijer.

Data specialist Marc van der Vegt says: “I suspect that the national coordinator for counterterrorism and security will greet the study’s findings with a smile. Whether there is a basis for this is not yet known, but another “trial period” will “help.” Who knows a good plastic surgeon?”
