“The Garden Beyond the Veil”
A Joyful Easter Story in the Style of C.S. Lewis
Jonathan had always thought of death as something cold and gray. He had, in fact, feared it quite reasonably—like one fears a dark cellar with no light. But that Easter morning, everything changed.
He had fallen asleep the night before with the Scriptures beside him, his mind lingering on those strange words: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” There had been thunder in the night—he was certain of it—but now, morning light was spilling through the shutters with the gentleness of golden wine.
Except this wasn’t his room.
He was in a garden. A real one—so impossibly green and sweet that it seemed to be singing. Not literally, of course, but in the way the breeze danced through the olive branches, and how the flowers nodded in perfect time, as if Creation itself remembered something glorious.
A man was sitting by a tree, waiting.
Jonathan felt no fear, only a kind of longing that felt like homesickness in reverse.
“You’re awake,” the man said. His eyes sparkled, and there was laughter behind them—as if he had just played a great, divine trick on death.
“I… I died?” Jonathan asked, blinking.
“In a way,” said the man. “But more importantly—you’ve risen. Just like Me.”
It hit him then. The veil had torn. The stone had rolled away. Not just in some dusty tomb in Judea two thousand years ago—but here, now. In him.
Jonathan laughed. He couldn’t help it. All that sorrow, all that fear—it had evaporated like mist. He was alive, more alive than he had ever been.
And somewhere, beyond this garden, bells were ringing—not in mourning, but in victory.

Jonathan hatte den Tod immer für etwas Kaltes und Graues gehalten. Und tatsächlich hatte er ihn ganz vernünftig gefürchtet – so wie man einen dunklen Keller fürchtet, in dem kein Licht brennt. Doch an diesem Ostermorgen veränderte sich alles.
Am Abend zuvor war er mit der Bibel neben sich eingeschlafen, die Worte hallten noch in seinem Kopf: „Was sucht ihr den Lebenden bei den Toten?“ In der Nacht hatte es gedonnert – davon war er überzeugt – aber jetzt strömte das Licht des Morgens mit der Sanftheit von flüssigem Gold durch die Fensterläden.
Nur war das nicht sein Zimmer.
Er befand sich in einem Garten. Ein echter Garten – so unfassbar grün und süß, dass er beinahe sang. Nicht buchstäblich natürlich, aber im Tanz des Windes durch die Olivenzweige und im sanften Nicken der Blumen – als ob die ganze Schöpfung sich an etwas Herrliches erinnerte.
Ein Mann saß unter einem Baum und wartete.
Jonathan verspürte keine Angst, sondern ein tiefes Sehnen – wie Heimweh, nur umgekehrt.
„Du bist wach“, sagte der Mann. In seinen Augen funkelte es, und dahinter lauerte ein Lächeln – als hätte er dem Tod einen großen, göttlichen Streich gespielt.
„Ich… bin gestorben?“ fragte Jonathan.
„Auf eine Weise“, antwortete der Mann. „Aber viel wichtiger – du bist auferstanden. So wie Ich.“
Da begriff er es. Der Vorhang war zerrissen. Der Stein war weggerollt. Nicht nur in einem alten Grab in Judäa – sondern hier, jetzt. In ihm.
Jonathan lachte. Er konnte nicht anders. Alle Traurigkeit, alle Angst – sie waren verdunstet wie Nebel. Er lebte. Mehr als je zuvor.
Und irgendwo, jenseits dieses Gartens, läuteten Glocken – nicht zur Trauer, sondern zum Sieg.
