Deconstructing the Lens of Power: “Echoes in Stone” – A Video Essay
How does a regime build a myth? Not just with words, but with images, scale, and rhythm.
Our latest video essay, “Echoes in Stone,” is now available. This project is a formal and critical dissection of the cinematic language perfected by Third Reich propaganda filmmakers. It is not a historical documentary in the traditional sense, but rather a visual autopsy.
The film moves slowly, deliberately, through the monumental architecture left behind, using contemporary footage to isolate the aesthetic components of fascist cinema: the god-like low angles, the crushing scale designed to dwarf the individual, the hypnotic tracking shots, and the manipulation of collective gaze.
By stripping away the original soundtracks and ideology, and juxtaposing these forms with a dissonant, minimalist score, the essay aims to disarm the seductive power of these images. It asks us to look critically at how beauty and order can be weaponized to sell submission, and how the grammar of film itself can be co-opted to manufacture destiny.
This is a study in media literacy, a warning written in light and shadow.
