As I sit here, pipe in hand and ink flowing freely, I cannot help but ponder the absurdities and curiosities that this past week has thrust upon us. A man who claims he can “outwit nature” has invented a contraption so confounding it makes the simplest task – boiling water – an ordeal of engineering. They call it the “automatic tea maker,” but I call it a monument to human folly. Imagine a device with more knobs and levers than a steamship, designed solely to do what a kettle and fire have done since time immemorial. Progress, they call it. Progress toward what, I wonder – a world where we forget how to use our hands entirely?
Tuesday saw a most remarkable tale unfold in the local paper – a farmer, bewildered by the unusual behavior of his hens, discovered that they had taken to laying square eggs. The scientific community descended upon the man’s humble farm like vultures on carrion, offering theories ranging from dietary peculiarities to cosmic interference. I, for one, believe it is merely the chickens’ way of protesting the shape of their coops. Birds, after all, have opinions too.
On Wednesday, my neighbor – a man so pompous he considers himself nature’s final draft – attempted to lecture me on the art of writing. “Mr. Twain,” he said, “your sentences are too short, your humor too crude, and your subjects too common.” I thanked him kindly for his unsolicited advice and suggested he consider taking up the pen himself. It takes a peculiar arrogance to criticize the musings of another while producing none of your own.
Thursday brought rain, which, while welcomed by the parched fields, seemed to inspire every horse-drawn carriage in the county to transform the roads into impassable swamps. I spent the day indoors, rereading some of my own works. I am pleased to report they remain as sharp and amusing as ever – though, naturally, I might be slightly biased.
By Friday, the sun had returned, and with it came the circus. Ah, the circus – humanity’s grandest display of silliness. A tightrope walker dazzled the crowd by performing without a net, while an elephant painted pictures more sophisticated than some galleries I have seen. A man with an uncanny resemblance to a walrus swallowed swords, and I could not decide if I was more impressed by his daring or his diet.
Saturday concluded with a letter from an old friend, who wrote: “Mark, do you ever grow weary of observing the endless absurdities of mankind?” I replied, “Dear friend, I would no sooner grow weary of observing man than a bear would tire of honey. The spectacle is eternal, and my ink shall never run dry.”
And so, we arrive at Sunday – a day of rest, reflection, and in my case, mischief. For what is life if not a great jest, to be observed, recorded, and laughed at until the curtain falls?
Yours in humor and perpetual astonishment,
Mark Twain
