North Korea appears to have restarted a nuclear reactor widely believed to have produced plutonium for atomic weapons, the UN nuclear watchdog said, a likely signal Pyongyang is expanding its banned nuclear program. Signs of operation at the 5-megawatt reactor, seen as capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium, were the first to be seen since late 2018, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a report dated Friday.
