The Quebec College of Physicians, the medical board of the French-speaking province, has stated in a position paper that medical assistance in dying (MAiD) “could be an appropriate treatment for babies suffering from extreme pain.” In an earlier statement from December 2021, the board had already supported euthanasia for newborns in cases of “intolerable, non-relievable suffering.”

The statement is not an isolated incident. In 2022, Dr. Louis Roy, a member of the Quebec College of Physicians, told the Parliamentary Special Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying that the program could be extended to “babies from birth to one year of age” born with “severe deformities and very serious syndromes.”
