THE ULTIMATUM

The Bangladeshi community in Venice has issued an ultimatum to new Mayor Simone Venturini: either the city approves the construction of a large mosque in Mestre, or the community will paralyze the city. The spokesman for the Bangladeshi community, Prince Howlader, president of the “Giovani per l’umanit\u00e0” (Youth for Humanity) association, stated:

“If they don’t allow us to build our mosque, we are ready to take to the streets. And if we Bengalis strike, then Fincantieri stops in Venice, Mestre and Marghera \u2013 and the entire tourism industry with kitchens, restaurants and hotels.”

The threat is all the more explosive as the Bangladeshi community now plays a key role in Venice’s economy. An estimated 40,000 Muslims now live in Venice and the mainland \u2013 about half of them of Bangladeshi origin. They work in the tourism industry, restaurants, hotels, and at Fincantieri, the large shipbuilding company in Porto Marghera.

THE BACKGROUND

The community purchased a plot of land in Via Giustizia in Mestre weeks ago for 1.5 million euros \u2013 a former sawmill they intend to use for the construction of an Islamic center. The former mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, had recommended the site to the community years ago as a possible location for a mosque.

But the new mayor, Simone Venturini, a man of the center-right coalition, has stopped the project. His reasoning: “The time is not yet ripe” \u2013 and the Bangladeshi community must first make “many strides in integration and respect for civil coexistence.” Venturini cited concrete examples: the garbage problems in neighborhoods with high Bangladeshi populations, the integration of women, and the wearing of the full-body veil.

THE REACTION

Venturini has made clear that he is not fundamentally opposed to a mosque, but he rejects a “monumental project” like the planned mega-mosque. He pointed out that there are already several prayer rooms for Muslims in Venice.

The Bangladeshi community, however, sees itself as having been in dialogue with the city administration for three years and now feels betrayed. Howlader emphasized that the project is not “a mosque for Bengalis” but a center for the entire Muslim community.

DAS ULTIMATUM

Die bangladeschische Gemeinde in Venedig hat dem neuen B\u00fcrgermeister Simone Venturini ein Ultimatum gestellt: Entweder die Stadt genehmigt den Bau einer gro\u00dfen Moschee in Mestre, oder die Gemeinde wird die Stadt lahmlegen. Sie arbeiten in der Tourismusbranche, in Restaurants, Hotels und bei Fincantieri, dem gro\u00dfen Schiffbaukonzern in Porto Marghera.

DER HINTERGRUND

Die Gemeinde hat bereits vor Wochen ein Grundst\u00fcck in der Via Giustizia in Mestre f\u00fcr 1,5 Millionen Euro gekauft \u2013 eine ehemalige Segherei, die sie f\u00fcr den Bau eines islamischen Zentrums vorgesehen hat. Der fr\u00fchere B\u00fcrgermeister Luigi Brugnaro hatte das Grundst\u00fcck der Gemeinde vor Jahren als m\u00f6glichen Standort f\u00fcr eine Moschee empfohlen.

Doch der neue B\u00fcrgermeister Simone Venturini, ein Mann der Mitte-Rechts-Koalition, hat das Projekt gestoppt. B\u00fcrgermeister Venturini hat eine rote Linie gezogen, aber die Frage ist, wie lange er sie halten kann.
