Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $5.5 billion to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging that its baby powder and other talc-based products caused ovarian cancer \u2014 a landmark settlement that could finally close a legal battle that has haunted the company for more than a decade.

Despite the massive payout, Johnson & Johnson continues to deny that its talc products caused cancer. Erik Haas, the company’s vice president of litigation, called the claims “meritless” and said the company remains confident it would have “ultimately prevailed with further litigation,” just as it has in the majority of cases heard in court to date.
