The Beatles begin rehearsing at Twickenham Studios for what is at first meant to be a television special about the recording of their next album leading up to a live show at a location to be determined. The band rehearse embryonic versions of songs that will appear on the “Let It Be” album, as well as some songs that were later recorded for solo releases by John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Yoko Ono appears several times with Lennon, on one occasion singing, and is also shown chatting with Linda McCartney. Harrison is accompanied by Hare Krishna friends. Music publisher Dick James appears and runs through the latest catalogue of songs he has acquired for Northern Songs. After seven days of tense rehearsals that reveal problems in the band members’ motivation and collaborative process, Harrison abruptly leaves the group!!!

Rehearsals briefly resume amid uncertainty over the band’s future. Following a productive meeting with Harrison, the Beatles agree to abandon the idea of a live show and relocate to their Apple Corps studio to formally record the new album. Billy Preston, a musician the group met in Hamburg, joins in on the sessions on electric piano.

The Beatles continue recording as the deadline for completing the project, caused by Ringo Starr’s filming schedule for “The Magic Christian“, approaches. McCartney continues to hope that the band will perform live for an audience and Lennon meets American businessman Allen Klein for the first time. On the penultimate day, the Beatles perform an unannounced concert on the roof of the Apple Corps building, attracting crowds of passers-by as well as the attention of the Metropolitan Police.

The Beatles: Get Back est un documentaire musical américano-britannico-néo-zélandais en trois épisodes réalisé par Peter Jackson. Diffusé en primeur entre le 25 et le 27 novembre 2021 sur la plate-forme Disney+, il est tiré de près de 60 heures d’images inédites et de plus de 150 heures audio, tournées et enregistrées en janvier 1969 par Michael Lindsay-Hogg, sur les plateaux de cinéma de Twickenham à Londres, ainsi que dans le studio de fortune de la compagnie Apple Corps, lors des séances de répétitions et d’enregistrements des Beatles, ponctuées par leur ultime concert, à peine public, sur le toit de leur immeuble.
Cette mini-série en trois parties, dont l’addition frise les huit heures, reprend le titre d’origine du projet et veut prendre le contrepied de ce que Lindsay-Hogg avait décidé d’accentuer dans le choix du montage sur un peu plus de 80 minutes : les déboires du groupe phare des années 1960 en train de se disloquer. Selon Peter Jackson, « la réalité est très différente du mythe » et l’ambiance n’était pas aussi malsaine qu’on l’a longtemps cru. De fait, le documentaire montre bien quatre musiciens qui restent très amis, collaborant pour faire évoluer chaque composition, créant leur musique dans une ambiance qui devient excellente après le départ des studios de Twickenham pour celui, plus intime, du sous-sol d’Apple Corps et l’arrivée de Billy Preston aux claviers pour les accompagner. Toutefois, jusqu’à la dernière minute, le groupe n’arrive pas à se mettre d’accord sur la finalité de son projet, ce qui occasionne d’interminables discussions, et tous les éléments qui vont mener à la séparation des Beatles plus tard dans l’année sont notables dans ce documentaire qui est présenté chronologiquement, sous forme de calendrier égrenant un jour après l’autre au début de chaque « chapitre ». Le concert de 42 minutes donné sur le toit de l’immeuble de Savile Row, le 30 janvier 1969, y est notamment montré dans son entier.
D’un point de vue musical, ces séances sont extrêmement prolifiques puisqu’on y voit le groupe créer, répéter et enregistrer en 21 jours, outre toutes les chansons de Let It Be, l’essentiel de celles qui figureront dans Abbey Road, et plusieurs morceaux qui apparaîtront sur les albums de Harrison, McCartney et Lennon après la séparation du groupe.

The Beatles: Get Back is a 2021 documentary series directed and produced by Peter Jackson. It covers the making of the Beatles‘s 1970 album Let It Be (which had the working title of Get Back) and draws from never-before-seen footage and audio material originally captured for the identically titled 1970 documentary of the album ( by Michael Lindsay-Hogg. Originally conceived as a feature film, the docuseries now has a total runtime of nearly eight hours, consisting of three episodes between two and three hours, each covering roughly weekly periods of 21 days of studio time. The series is presented by Walt Disney Studios in association with Apple Corps and WingNut Films.
Jackson characterized it as “a documentary about a documentary”. Commentators have described it as challenging longtime beliefs that the making of the Let It Be album was marked entirely by tensions between the Beatles, instead showing a more upbeat side to its production. It premiered with three consecutive daily releases on Disney+ beginning on 25 November 2021. The miniseries was widely praised by critics, who highlighted the historical merit of the footage and its showing of the inner workings of the band, although some deemed its runtime to be excessive.
